My name is Susan Sepulveda. I was born in Chicago
Illinois where I lived until I was five. I then moved to a suburb right outside
of the city called Des Plaines. I have one younger sister, who is seven years
apart from me. I am Chilean, Greek, and
Italian and have a very large family. One of my hobbies includes dancing ballet
which I have done for thirteen years.
Unlike many others, my interest in baking and pastry
did not begin when I was five. It sparked when I was in high school. I had
taken some home economics classes in eighth grade and when I reached high
school I decided to venture out into the culinary field by taking the beginning
course, called foods that were offered at my high school in Des Plaines,
Illinois. Freshman year had its ups and downs, but the one thing that stayed
consistent was the one joy I had fourth period. The joy of chopping, sautéing,
and baking that no one else seemed to have in the class. During that school
year my teacher for the course noticed I had an interest in the field, and
asked me if I would like to join a club called F.C.C.L.A. I was unsure if I
would like it or not but I gave it a try, and did cookie decorating to start off
since I was doing culinary in my every day regular course. That year I placed
second at regionals, and first at state. I knew that when I put my chef jacket
on I was invincible. Ever since then, I have competed in cake decorating for
all four years and had a passion for the pastry arts.
At Johnson and Wales, my interests and goals are endless. I want to learn as much as I can, and get better at the techniques and methods that are taught. I am interested in the cake decorating, but also in the sugar and chocolate labs that are offered. In five years I see myself graduating Johnson and Wales with a bachelor’s degree, and working for a large hotel somewhere. Eventually I would love to open up my own bakery and help sick children and charities by doing something I love to do. Bake!
